Katie’s Float for her state report.

On Monday evening Our oldest granddaughter Katie called me and said grandma, mom said you were coming to town tomorrow and I was wondering if you would stay until I got home from school. We were hoping you could help us with my float I have to make for my state report. (We meaning her and her mom)  I the unsuspecting grandma, thinking a little float couldn’t be too hard said Sure I can probably do that.  So the next morning I go to town and pick up Bens graduation announcements and stamps and go to Amy’s house. The sweet girl knowing I had announcements to mail said she would help me get them labeled stuffed and ready to go. Then we could go over Katie’s float, she could show me what Katie had in mind and figure out how to accomplish it. I don’t think either one of them had a clue how much work it was going to take to pull off what They had decided needed to be on the float. But we got the announcements done and mailed and then Amy started showing me what they had in mind and what we had to work with. OH MAN!  We had a wagon, some card board box’s, some paints and crape paper, glue & markers. Oh and some pictures of what we were supposed to put on this float. Then Amy told me they wanted me to draw the pictures they had onto the cardboard that was going to be the sides of the float. I HAVEN’T DRAWN ANYTHING SINCE AMY WAS IN 5TH GRADE, WHAT ARE THEY THINKING? Then I looked at the pictures, OH MAN!  Amy said she would draw the state flag, the state was Maryland by the way. And she assured Katie that I could handle drawing the rest. and then they would paint it. OKE DOKY, so I get to draw a picture of a Baltimore Oriole, the state bird, some Black Eyed Susan’s, the state flower, and the first steam engine. That was made in Maryland called the Tom Thumb. I was ok with the flowers, hesitant about the bird, and the Tome Thumb? Were they out of their minds? YES I thought they were. So Amy and I found a box that fit over the wagon perfectly, so we didn’t have to tape pieces of cardboard together. Then when Katie got home we went to the store and bought more paint, some duct tape, red and gray, and a multipack of paint brushes. and a red men’s hanky. the hanky was for Katie’s costume as was the red duct tap it was used to make red suspenders.

When we got home Amy had to run Madison to Achievement Days so Katie and I opened the box on one side so we could lay it flat on the floor to do the art work. then I got Katie doing a base coat of blue and green. Then she got the blow dryer out to dry it quicker. then we all started drawing, Amy did the flag and I showed Katie how to draw the flowers and then paint them. While she was working on the flowers I started on the bird. The little steam engine came last. The hours wore on and on as we all worked together. We were about 3/4 finished at about 10pm when Amy sent Katie to bed, Amy and I finished up the final touches. so here is Katie’s float which we finished about 12:30 am this morning.I surprised myself by still being able to  draw and direct the painting of  that bird and the Thom Thumb. I really thought there was no way I could do a decent job on them. And I think I was able to teach my girls a thing or two about drawing and painting.  I hope Katie remembers what I was trying to teach her, if she doesn’t remember the lessons on drawing and painting at least she’ll remember grandma was right there with her helping her with a in depth project. Any way here it is. Oh and I left this morning before it was all put together on the wagon and I think they did an awesome job.
